Learning the basic terms used during a roulette game is the first step to learning how to play!

Here is a list of basic roulette terms:

American wheel – a roulette wheel with 38 numbers, instead of the European 37
Ball – the ball that is thrown onto the spinning wheel
Black – a bet on all black numbers
Block betting – a strategy through which you bet on a group of numbers on the wheel
Carre – corner bet (French)
Colonne – column bet (French)
Column bet – a bet on a group of 12 numbers at the same time
Combination bet – betting on more than one number at the same time
Corner bet – betting on four numbers at the same time, if the four numbers are touching
Coup – a roll
Croupier – in land-based casinos or Live Roulette games, it is the person who runs the roulette
En prison rule – when the player either surrenders half his bet or lets it be played again for the next spin. If he wins the next spin, he gets the wager back
European wheel – also known as the French Wheel, it contains 37 pockets
Even bet – betting on all even numbers
Five number bet – betting on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 simultaneously
French wheel – also known as the European Wheel. It contains 37 pockets
Green numbers – the 0 and 00
High or Low Bet – a bet on all low numbers (1 – 18) or on all high numbers (19 – 36)
Inside bets – betting on numbers directly and not their color or whether or not they’re odd
Line bet – betting on six adjoining numbers
Neighbors – numbers adjacent to the winning one
Odd bet – betting on all odd numbers
Outside bet – betting on anything but the numbers
Parlay or press – placing the previous amount you won on top of your current bet
Red – betting on all red numbers
Single number bet – a bet on a single number
Six number bet – betting on six inside numbers simultaneously
Split bet – betting on two adjacent numbers simultaneously
Straight (up) bet – betting on just one number
Street bet – betting on three numbers in a line
Toke – tip for the dealer (only in land-based casinos)
Trio bet – betting on three numbers at the same tim
Zero – betting on Zero
